Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law
There should be no doubt on what to do with any Grade where the Oaths and Tasks are definite; and curriculum clear.
Well, not so fast.
We do have one warning that must be heeded seriously. Prudence must be observed with Enochian magic. No doubt, if you do the 30th even at Probationer you’ll get an answer but it shall pass where you might bring forces upon yourself that will hinder your Path. Most certainly, sensible advice would be the Zelator who has already had done the work of the astral; and can handle the forces much better can proceed with the 30th. The Zelator who is doing asana everyday, in addition, has much better control. What’s that? You don’t believe me? Or you’re one of these solitary magicians who want to experience something? Perhaps a more spiritual goal might be suggested than seeing you make a Call where the answer might not be so positive an adventure as you originally thought. Not listening to me?
Well, who heeds such advice when you have so many books on Enochian magic? Most certainly with twenty books on Enochian magic by twenty authors means you’ll find something to avoid disaster. Or will you? Are you doing the Calls to see what happens as a thrill? Are you using the Golden or Honey Topaz stone or just reciting the Call without the stone; or have you built the complete magical object? I see quite a few skip over the creation of what A.C. called “The Topaz of the Magus”. Of course doing the first Call without the stone might give you the voice but at least if you decided to do the Call and do it with the complete object with some astral work and asana already done you might have some level of the vision and the voice.
What? You haven’t built the Topaz of the Magus after four years of being a practicing magician and accepting the Law of Θελημα? What are you waiting for? A different God or Goddess to Sit on the Throne of Ra, or what? A.C.’s warning about Prudence doesn’t mean you do nothing forever; and whatever other teachers might suggest I am advising that the Topaz of the Magus can be created to start with Enochian magic. Caution means you have done sufficient work with astral travel; and enough Yoga for Dharana to at least by Zelator to be ready for the first Call. We can’t be sure when a solitary magician is ready; and I do not teach outside my Hierarchy so a solitary magician can take my advice only so far. For myself, it is a waste of time to instruct or judge anyone outside the Hierarchy who hasn’t signed any Oath or Task.
Bearing all this in mind, I shall therefore go over the creation of the Topaz of the Magus where I already know I cannot stop fools from their folly; and at least if you have the Topaz of the Magus you’ll be better off than going in completely blind to magical forces that might overwhelm you. Creating the Topaz of the Magus you will use a jig saw to cut the wood for the Calvary Cross that is six squares; and shop for a fairly large polished Golden Topaz stone. A.C.’s stone was round but any shape that feels right for you. This is a very powerful Talisman; and such Talismans build themselves based on who you are; and what your will is. You will be gaining the attention from forces from the Inner Planes so strange phenomena is not uncommon. The wood carving tools can create an indent based on the shape you've found to be right magically for you. You can super glue the stone in the middle of the Calvary Cross. Before you do that and paint it vermilion there is a matter of the Greek Cross of five squares and in its middle is the 49 petal rose to be engraved. Creating the complete Talisman before you do the 30th Call at least follows some self discipline with how you are proceeding. When you are ready to paint the entire Calvary Cross vermilion my advice is to mix the two colors yourself to get the satisfactory mix of red and orange. Or simply paint the entire Cavalry Cross except for the area you are to engrave and glue the Golden Topaz stone to. No two versions of the completed Talisman are alike; and even your balance of paint colors might give you a vermilion that looks slightly different than another magician’s. Some sand the sides of the Cavalry Cross and some do not. This is your version of the Topaz of the Magus; and not another magician’s!! Someone has tried to dictate how you proceed and you “feel” your method is right? Well, don’t permit dogmatic thinking disturb your originality. Of course, if instruction from your Immediate Superior tells you to consecrate the entire Talisman upon completion with Abramelin Oil or something else that is magically important this is different. You plan to vibrate the 30th Call and enter the Golden Topaz stone for your vision for the first time without some method of a consecration of the Talisman? Think again; and use common sense.
The Six of Disks does have a 49 Petal Rose to use as a guide; and keep in mind that no matter how big your stone is it need not cover the entire body of the Rose. After all, you aren’t going to need or end up needing a jeweler’s magnification glass to engrave the Rose where you situate the stone super glued in the center. Find the topaz stone that is right for you even if it you cannot find one as large as A.C.’s which covers the entire 49 petal rose.
As everybody knows, the Greek Cross of Five Squares was the Admission Badge to the “Ritual of the Cross and the Four Elements” in the Portal grade of the old Golden Dawn. What you may of overlooked it is a part of the Topaz of the Magus where in the midst of the Five Squares is the 49 petal rose.
You’ll note a photo of the “Topaz of the Magus” is on the left bottom corner of the photo of A.C. giving the sign of Pan where his hood is folded up to look like a triangle hat. Note its size which might be difficult that unless you create the Calvary Cross bigger you’ll have to deal with detail that will be tedious. So you might consider a bigger version of the overall object than the only known image of this famous object. You might find that whatever size your stone is will determine the size of the Calvary Cross and gematria can be included in your measurement. Making the object bigger than you originally anticipated might be efficient when you pencil the 49 petal rose petals getting ready with your wood working tools to engrave it carefully. Well, I do not know what adhesive or glue was on the shelves in the stores in England in A.C.’s time but I do know that we can recommend any number of glues that will keep the topaz stone secure from falling from the Calvary Cross when you press the stone to your forehead; and enter the vision after you vibrate the first Call.
I would otherwise advise you go to the trouble of creating the Topaz of the Magus before your first Call. Noted that you might die or go insane if you do not heed my advice but, of course, of course, I must be exaggerating where I emphasize that Prudence really is necessary just like A.C. warned.
I might reiterate that even taking my advice where caution is heeded dealing with such overwhelming forces of magick from the Calls you might might die or go insane anyway. If you have conquered the astral plane; and have attained some Dharana at least you’ve tried to prepare yourself.
A few have arrived on the other side of the lack of Prudence where such insanity creates the delusion thinking they have crossed the abyss; or have actually become a puppet of the black brothers where what would have been a glorious adventure turned into a nightmare of endless delusions mistaken for the real initiations.
