Meditations on the Modus Operandi

written by David Bersson

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law

In this lecture shall give some insights into my specialized “modus operandi” which originates from my Instructor’s years of tutelage. Call it "Motta’s Operations and I" where he gave rise to many insights on how to progress; and many ideas on what to concentrate on. Some baggage I carried with me from my past experiences such as the Pickett Slide Rule being used as a mental discipline. I should touch upon various meditations which involve what you’ve chosen to be your Great Work and modus operandi.

Years ago, I thought it might be beneficial to learn Egyptian Hieroglyphics to translate not only the Stele but to create rituals or to understand ancient ceremonies; and make use of them. I used Egyptian Grammar by Sir Alan Gardiner which over the years I have used as a mental discipline; and for all those motives of a magician and exorcist. Many students over the years have enjoyed my enthusiasm that they began to study the subject. Several members which I seemed to have especially inspired ran around the local area years ago acting like they were archaeologists; and in one case a person now long gone from the Order used my notes.  Although I learned a lot I have not ever at any time gone to the university for it. I would never, never, place myself on their level where they attended hands on, or classroom formalities; nor do I claim a Degree I do not have. My motivations are not an archaeologist career nor to even teach Hieroglyphics privately but simply part of the discipline and work of my Path.

I want to bring up how important the purchase of Walter Skeat’s “An Etymological Dictionary of the English language” recommended by A.C.  years ago has been important to my Path and Will.

My Instructor did recommend a study of the works of Alfred North Whitehead which I’ll touch upon my thoughts on its study.

As it has come to pass I have done as much work with etymology as I have with Gematria which I used Hebrew, Coptic,  Greek and English. Even astral visions have included both gematria and etymology in my private analysis. Abstraction of thought form that balances the pairs of opposites does develop your lens differently than the cold bloodiness of mathematical equations. Although metaphysical mathematics does assist and Alfred North Whitehead was recommended by my Instructor. I found it in addition stimulating to work out my meditations with etymology and gematria where I opened up Skeat’s dictionary more than Whitehead’s works. It is otherwise important not to ignore either. Nevertheless, the concept of “exact thought as applied to natural phenomena” is an aspiration that does cover the groundwork of the abstraction of thought form viewed from the perspective of pairs of opposites and Whitehead’s original thesis. “Are these equations really giving us the truth of the universe more accurately than metaphysical insight awakening from initiation?” might be an example of such meditations from my will to work along these lines.

I should state without reservation that the nomenclature of astrophysics clarifies much of the confusion of their science published papers. Yet, when you move past this to clarity of definition I point out that they are simply not applying phenomenal existence which is a necessary process of  a progression of what reality really is. Meaning, to experience the universe and its correlation with “Hadit unto Nuit”.  I do realize how presumptuous this might seem on the surface where the reality that is experienced of the universe with initiations involves an observation more accurate than some of the newer equations of astrophysics but I also admit that the issues of rationalizations in philosophy have the same issue and objections. Are these equations that are supposed to see reality as reality with regards to natural phenomena really accurate in astrophysics or astronomy? What is “consciousness” is a meditation. What is “dark energy” and does it really exist is a scientific rationalization. Such meditations are included in my “Modus Operandi”. Of course, my Modus Operandi might be paralleled by some but I am not insisting that you should operate the way I operate. You have your own path. Moreover, we have the issue of definitions of Trances where you might experience a magical operation or gesture that changes your perspective of a word, for example “nirvana.” After all, in the east this insane idea of something they call  duḥkha or suffering that results in the nirvana being something they insist they need to attain to experience this trance. By its description it looks like a dead end consciousness who lost the spirit of the True Self where they claim that they possess bliss and happiness where if you observe them they are on the street corner in a diaper and begging bowl. For us, existence is pure joy and we lust and enjoy all things of sense and rapture. Most certainly, they consider nirvana a trance where I consider it the very definition of a product of a deteriorated spiritual system.

No doubt, here we have the issue of versatile ingenium from both the initiate and astronomer where the aspiration is the same but the outcome questionable where the initiate tries to express what we call insight; and astrophysics with its equations tries to progress our view of the material universe.

My observation that trying to classify any eastern Trance to the crossing of the abyss is sterile in its attempt. For none thing, the crossing of the abyss isn’t a Trance in the sense that a Trance like Samadhi would be falsely promoted as a parallel. The glossary at the back of Little Essays Towards works well enough as our standardized definitions but additions will be made as experiences dictate. Nevertheless, we must keep an open mind that Trances that we haven’t experienced or heard of will exist as the New Aeon progresses. I absolutely agree with A.C.’s recommendation that etymological studies of words assist our context and clarity. If you truly apply “the method of science with the aim of religion” your path of spiritual enlightenment has a chance to evolve. A method to evolve spiritual enlightenment is pause for many a mediation. At least it is for me whose modus operandi includes change!!

No matter whether it involves the western temperament, charlatan gurus, missed parallels and what the Adepts and Masters in the west with their experiences have told us we have this issue of definitions of Trances. In addition to this issue, we have that old monster under our bed of an issue where anything of what we now define as “orthodox” has its dogmatic screams of objections coming out from under the bed and disturbing our restful and content definitions. I do not use the word “Trance” in the way a stage magician connects it with a hypnotic blank stare of hypnotic entertainment.

I have explained that the nomenclature of the western esoteric path of spiritual enlightenment and magick does include eastern esoteric words. Those eastern words will have inconsistent or altered definitions where through any situation or event might have created a difference and especially our idea of “Trance” has a definition for us to consider. The stage magicians, perhaps, I shall point out that they might at least have had something to do with its twisted translation. After all, when we use the word “Trance” it does not mean a hypnotized idiot.

I did find “Russell's paradox” did parallel the concept in the official texts where all thought is a contradiction.

I have given much to meditate upon. Perhaps some of these ideas might inspire you to a very real point event where you’ve understood the modus operandi as a very grounded perspective for the initiate.

Love is the law, love under will

In the aftermath of the above lecture I was privately inquired of what my remark about the Pickett Slide Rule was all about. When it comes to the Slide Rule I really know how to “Pickett”. I should cover that anyone who was related or associated with a World War II veteran is always going to use the Picket Slide Rule which are made of aluminum. The Japs use Bamboo, and the Nazis used wood and the Commies used everybody. Well, I’ll have no Nazi relic such as a Slide Rule from that time in Germany in my somewhat extensive collection of Slide Rules. Two interesting figures in history worthy of admiration who used the Slide Rule were Janis Joplin and Issac Asimov. The very first book I read by Isaac Asimov was his now collector’s item book called “An easy introduction to the slide rule”. At the time he published this fine book with Fawcett Publishing he has been using the Slide Rule for twenty years. This book which cost sixty cents back in the day and the sixty four page official manual put out by Pickett are what you’ll need if you would parallel such a Path of mental discipline. Besides, what could be more delightful than to enter a restaurant filled with college students; and see them all stare at you when you pull out the Slide Rule to determine what the tip for the waitress is. How interesting that Uncle Issac Asimov who wrote when modern computers were yet science fiction wrote in his introduction that using electronic computers are alike to shooting a fly with naval artillery. His book on the subject should really be reprinted with the Pickett Slide Rule sixty four page manual at the back of the book. As everybody knows, both the Slide Rule and the Blueprint have been respectfully been replaced by the electronic calculator; and the copy machine is clearly a useful device not only for Engineers. The 914 Machine by Xerox made the Blueprint as it was for old engineers obsolete. All this meant you either went back to school and kept up with technology or took lesser employment. Be that as it may, the issue of skills and technology was covered in the introduction of the recommended book called “The Canon”. We face the issue again with the invention of AI where I absolutely recommend some of these so-called twenty century technologies for study and mental discipline. Read my essay written as a lecture to computer personnel for a commentary of these issues.
